本学会では、１２月１日、２日の両日、大阪学院大学で１５回記念大会を開催いたしましたが、１２月８日に場所を関西大学に改め、今回ご招待しましたCharles Briggs 先生にご講演をいただき、記念大会の締め括りにいたしたいと考えております。

タイトル： The Metapragmatics of Racialized Representations: Rationalizing Health Inequalities in News Coverage

要旨

This lecture deals with news coverage of health issues, but its focus is rather on how U.S. health news constructs issues of racial inequality. I look at the pragmatics used in deracializing medicine, in the dominant projection that race should not need to be invoked in talking about health and disease, as well as stories in which race comes to be central. This paper analyzes how stories often revolve centrally around metapragmatics, on projections of the production, circulation, and reception of biomedical discourse, and the sense that violating one’s proper pragmatic role―by failing to properly receive and assimilate discourse―came be a fatal condition.
